Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to joining Nexa Law as a consultant solicitor, we caught up with Private Client and Property Partner, Michael Keeling

Meet the Consultant…

Michael is an experienced property and private client solicitor who was previously a partner in a Legal 500 firm based in Shropshire and Wales.

What do you do at Nexa?

I’m a Director for MDK Law via Nexa’s consultancy platform, where I specialise in conveyancing and private client matters.

What made you join Nexa, and what were you looking for in a consultancy platform?

I joined Nexa to enable me to grow MDK Law and maintain excellent client service.  I was really looking for a more flexible way of working that would allow me to build my client base without compromising the excellent service I provide to current clients.

What do you most enjoy about being a consultant at Nexa?

I most enjoy the flexibility of working as a consultant.  I can choose the work I want to take on, and I can work from anywhere.  I get to spend more time with my family.  I have a much more stable work-life balance than I ever did working as a solicitor in a firm.

Becoming a consultant with Nexa has reformed my work life balance.  I’ve enhanced my professional relationships with referrers and now have flexibility in my working day to keep clients informed throughout the entire process.  Nexa provides the support and resources to enable me to be ambitious and grow my own business. Making the move into consultancy has positively re-shaped my career as a solicitor.

Where did you start your career, and where have you worked previously?

I started out as a trainee solicitor at Medlicott Snows Solicitors in Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire, before moving to Hatchers Solicitors in Whitchurch.  I then became a partner at GHP Solicitors in Oswestry, where I ran the Chirk and Llangollen offices before joining Nexa in my current consultancy role.

What one piece of advice would you give to a lawyer thinking about becoming self-employed?

I would say be sure you have a good network of people around you before becoming self-employed
