Nigel’s Story – Life at Nexa with Nigel Bowen

Nigel’s Story – Life at Nexa with Nigel Bowen

Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Nigel Bowen.

Meet the consultant…

Nigel is a commercial and commercial dispute resolution lawyer who also undertakes some probate work. Here’s what he had to say:

I’ve been with Nexa for just over two years now, after closing my small private practice when my partner retired. I had previously been a partner in the London firm where I trained. I set up my new firm in 1999 and it thrived until we closed it in 2020.

I wanted to carry on working, I certainly wasn’t ready to call it a day, so I started investigating the consultancy market. I looked at various firms offering the consultant model and Nexa really stood out. I felt confident that they were the perfect fit for me.

It really has been a breath of fresh air and I feel liberated; no more worrying about paying rent, business rates, salaries and PII, not to mention spending a month each year dealing with insurance brokers. I feel like I have genuine control over my work/life balance, and I even take holidays!

There’s an exceptional team of high-quality lawyers here at Nexa and it feels great to be part of it. No matter what my client’s requirements are, there is somebody here I can feel confident referring them to, if I don’t have the expertise myself.

My advice to any lawyer considering becoming self-employed and going down the consultancy route is hope for the best but plan for the worse. Always make sure you put ample money aside for your tax bills and bank on fee levels fluctuating – so build up reserves during the good times.”
