David’s Story – Life at Nexa with David Durkin-Finch
Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with David Durkin-Finch.
Meet the consultant…
David is a personal injury and conveyancing solicitor. Here’s what he had to say:
“Having run my own firm for five years, it became impossible to find favourable insurance terms so I was looking at alternatives that would enable me to work as a consultant. During the course of my research, I came across Nexa and soon realised this was the perfect solution for me.
The significant demands of running and managing a legal business can distract from the work we qualified to do as lawyers. Being freed from this bureaucracy has renewed my passion for my chosen fields. As a “people person” I love working with my clients and being self-employed has allowed me to focus on the reasons why I became a lawyer.
There’s a fantastic sense of camaraderie at Nexa and the support I have received from my colleagues here has been incredibly helpful. It’s really reassuring to know that you can always reach out to like-minded professionals for advice. The community we have here means it works both ways and I offer my support to others when it’s needed.
For anyone considering making the leap to self-employment, my advice would be to look at first setting up your own company as this provides financial protections and, to find an accountant you can work with to file your accounts etc.
If you thinking about joining a consultancy platform like Nexa, I would encourage people to look carefully at the culture, how much support is available if you need it, are there other lawyers there you will enjoy working with, what will you be expected to contribute personally, does the work ethic of those on the platform match your own?
For me, the hardest things about becoming a consultant were giving up the security of employment and overcoming my self-doubt that I could do this. But getting my business going as a self-employed solicitor was actually easier than I feared as I had the flexibility to achieve my goals and the space to be clear minded about those goals. I now ask myself why I didn’t do this sooner!”
