Nexa CEO, Nigel Clark and NexaConnex Leads, Matthew Dunne and Daniel Jenkins recently attended the 2022 Legal Management Summit in Oxford run by Alternative Events.

This invitation only event is now in its sixth year and aims to bring together managing partners and CEOs from the UK legal mid-market.

We were delighted to be invited along; the summit was the perfect opportunity to get together with other like-minded leaders and to discuss the issues we are all dealing with as we seek to grow our firms, embrace innovation and create a positive, business culture.

We heard some inspirational keynote speakers and enjoyed taking part in discussions which addressed some of the specific challenges facing ambitious, mid-market firms and, like us, alternative legal business models, in the current legal market.

Staffing challenges

One of the challenges which cropped up again and again in discussions was the difficulty in recruiting and retaining the right talent – a pre-requisite for growth. It’s no secret that there has been an “arms race” when it comes to legal salaries this year, and this has had a particularly significant impact on mid-market firms. While the largest, magic circle and US firms can keep throwing money at the problem, this is not an option for mid-market firms who are consequently being priced out of the market in some areas.
